BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION


An evergreen shrub that grows up to 6 metres high with bluish green narrow stiff needles. It has small flowers and small round berries which are green in the first year and black in the second & third years.


WHERE GROWN


Native to the northern hemisphere, especially Scandinavia, Siberia, Canada, Northern Europe & Northern Asia.


The oil is produced mainly in Italy, France, Yugoslavia, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Spain, Germany and Canada.


EXTRACTION METHOD


The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation.


CHARACTERISTICS


A water white or pale yellow mobile liquid with sweet, fresh, woody-balsamic smell.


BLENDS WELL WITH


Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Cypress, Clarysage, Pine, Lavender, Rosemary (excellent), Benzoin, Geranium, Lemon, Grapefruit, & Orange.


OBSERVATIONS/CONTRA INDICATIONS


Non Sensitising, may be slightly irritating, generally non-toxic. Because of its mild diuretic effect some

therapists advise that the oil is best avoided where there poor kidney function.


AROMATHERAPY USES


Acne, dermatitis, eczema (Helps dryness), May Help with nasal and bronchial infections, the oil either inhaled or applied to the skin may have a mild diuretic effect, also good for stress related conditions. Historically the oil has been used to treat muscular skeletal problems.

Monoterpenes:- µ -pinene 35% b -pinene, limonene 3-40%, camphene 0.3%, thujene 3%, sabinene 5%, myrcene 9%, g -terpinene 4%


Monoterpenols:- terpinen-1ol-4


REMARKS


The shrub is current in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia for rheumatic pain & cystitis.
